Jyot – Beyond Intent’s Scholarship Fund
Cost : $9,000 Status Completed on August 12, 2011
A scholarship of one year tuition fee, to be offered every year, to a deserving, underprivileged student registered to a school or college at Shri Shivaji Maratha Society, Pune, India.
In 2010, Beyond Intent planned to create a need-based merit scholarship to be offered every year, to a deserving, underprivileged student, irrespective of caste, creed or sex, for the high school or college tuition fee who is enrolled/ admitted in any college at Shri Shivaji Maratha Society, Pune, India. Beyond Intent raised the initial principal amount of $9,000 to create the scholarship fund. The interest accrued annually (6-7% offered in Indian banks as of now) would be offered as a scholarship to a student every year beginning June 2012.
An advisory committee of three or more members from Beyond Intent and Shivaji Maratha would be responsible for processing the application and selecting the recipient from the candidates applied. Student hailing from low-income families are strongly encouraged to apply. When the need for the selected recipient is lower than the funds available, more than one candidate will be awarded through this scholarship program. The award money will be directly paid to the recipient’s high school or college to pay the tuition fees for that year. Application is available online here (give the link for application here) as well as at all the offices of the schools and colleges registered under Shri Shivaji Maratha Society.
Why support this project?
Previously, in 2009, Shri Shivaji Maratha Society had provided unprecedented help for the “Computer Laboratory” project undertaken by Beyond Intent. Mr. Anil Takawane from this institution was instrumental in purchasing the computer hardware and setting up the laboratory. In January 2010, he informed Mr. Sandeep Kolte of a deserving student, Sagar Sugavekar, who lost his father. Sagar needed about $600 (30,000 Rupees) to pay his tuition fees for second year Bachelor of Sciences (B Sc.) course. After losing his father and taking up the family responsibility it was impossible for him to come up with the funds to continue education. He chose to give up his on his education and instead, took up a job that could barely help make both ends meet.
A Mumbai based businessman, Mr. Girish Mehta, who has helped Beyond Intent’s projects during several occasions in the past made a generous contribution towards this noble cause. Sagar personally went to Mumbai to collect the funds. The receipts for these transactions are available. Sagar is now in his second year of college and has vastly improved his chances to a brighter future. This experience motivated us to put a concrete project plan together which would enable us to help such students every year rather than having it as a one-time event.
Shri Shivaji Maratha Society has necessary resources and talented people with relevant experience that will be the key aspects in execution of this project.Beyond Intent has previously worked with Shri Shivaji Maratha Society and this association can provide Beyond Intent with a much needed exposure to underprivileged students who would like to continue education. The scholarship will always be paid from accrued interest making the project self-sustaining.As the award amount will be directly paid to the recipient student’s school, this will eliminate any misuse of the funds. Currently, this project is restricted to the schools and colleges registered under Shri Shivaji Maratha Society. In future, with more support from donors, we plan to extend to students from any college from any part of India.
