Gangadhar Baba orphanage was started by High Court Judge B.G. Kolse-Patil in 1997 by donating 11 acres of fertile land in Ahmednagar district of Maharashtra, India. He started the effort with the intentions of helping orphans by providing them shelter, food and today the orphanage has 75 children. All of them are orphans with no families or relatives. The children at Gangadhar Baba Orphanage have basic education, but they do not have the means to access computers. Basic computer literacy is one skill that this project will enable the children to add to their resume.

Project Description

What is the project about?
Beyond Intent plans to start a computer lab at Gangadhar Baba Orphanage, to impart computer literacy to about 34 orphan children, currently enrolled in primary and high school. Children at this Orphanage have basic education, but they do not have the means to access computers. With education in cities laying emphasis on computer education and literacy, most of the educational institutions in remote villages and towns in India do not have the resources to provide computer education. The nearest place where anybody in the orphanage can access computer is 20 miles away. There are about 34 out of 70 children in the orphanage that will potentially be using and learning computers and will have significant benefits by becoming computer literate in the future. Basic computer literacy is one skill that this project will enable the children to add to their resume. This will put them ahead in the race when competing for jobs.

Why support this project?
One actual incident at the Gangadhar Baba Orphanage made ‘Beyond Intent’ recognize the importance of computer in today’s life, especially the need for basic computer skill sets required to get a job. A Mumbai based executive, Mr. Girish Mehta, was looking for an office assistant for his company, Super Tech Industries. He requested Sandeep Kolte (‘Beyond Intent’ founder member) to recommend a suitable candidate for this opportunity. After initial enquiry in the orphanage, Sandeep came across, Mahesh Pandhare who had Bachelor of Arts degree and was on a lookout for a job. An opportunity and a deserving candidate were present. Besides regular paper work, the job demanded basic computer knowledge such as emailing, scanning, printing, word processing, etc. Unfortunately, Mahesh lost this opportunity since he had never used a computer. ‘Beyond Intent’ realized the need for computer education for the underprivileged children in India and is now working towards it.

The first phase of the computer lab project provided the students at Gangadhar Baba with hands on experience & knowledge about computer basics. Last year 18 students were able to appear & clear the MS-CIT exam. This year 8 more students will be doing the same. We are seeing a very encouraging trend this year, students who cleared the MSCIT exam last year are teaching the new students this year & helping them prepare for the exam.
